“There you are, damn I missed you!” Reece greeted me downstairs in the pub. Rather than wait for each other upstairs in our room, we’d hang around with friends, shooting some darts or pool on the nights when he wasn’t at football training.

“Good day at the office?”

“Ruined four men for fatherhood,” Reece laughed. “Good thing puppies don’t hold grudges.”

“Just what I wanted to hear before ordering sausages and mash for dinner.”

“Ouch! I think I might have to go the vegan option after that image.”

In the end, we both had the steak with thick, hand cut chips and salad. Reece hadn’t gotten changed out of his crisp white shirt with the new logo I had designed on the top right corner. The perfect color offset against his tanned arms and chest. Reece was possibly the most beautiful man I’d ever seen, and he was all mine.

But for how long?

“How was lunch, you didn’t tell me who you were catching up with? Anyone I know?” Reece took a sip of his beer, indicating to the waitress for a refill.

I hadn’t wanted to tell Reece about meeting Glenn until I’d made a decision. But since having secrets didn’t fit with the way we managed to have our relationship, not his nightmares or mine, I’d wanted to wait until after dinner. When we could be alone, in bed. After making love and I felt that comfortable togetherness. Safe.

“It was certainly an interesting conversation.”

“Sounds mysterious? Should I be worried?” Reece joked, but stopped laughing at my face. “Should I?”

“Glenn called me last week.”

I paused, waiting for an explosion that didn’t come. Reece tapped the side of the new glass of beer.

“He wanted to catch up, for lunch.”

Still, no reaction except for the incessant tapping. I should have told Reece when Glenn called. I definitely should have told Reece before going to meet my ex for lunch. It seemed all my omissions, while not lies, were about to bite me on the ass—and not the way I liked Reece to.

“I thought your settlement was finalized. You signed the paperwork.”

“So did I, which is why I didn’t tell you. I didn’t think there was anything left to tell.”

More silence before Reece skolled the drink and carefully placed his empty glass onto the table. His face still calm, controlled. I’d been used to Glenn’s unpredictable rage, but this was worse. I could see the hurt, the pain within the depths of Reece’s eyes but if he didn’t react, I couldn’t reach in and fix him.

“Babe, are you okay?” I didn’t dare reach for him, even though we were the couple that made everyone embarrassed by our public displays of affection. “Reece? Talk to me, please.”

“Are we okay?” I barely heard him over the sound of the background music and laughter.

Now, he’d given me something to react to. He didn’t resist when I grabbed his hand, stroking my thumb across his palm the way I knew soothed him at night when he awoke with nightmares. Clutching both his hands, I searched for the right words.
